Dopo aver scambiato due parole con la pro skier Caja Schoepf è venuta anche a noi una gran voglia di powder e meditazione! Appena tornata dal suo viaggio tra India e Pakistan con l’amica Lena Stoffel, ci ha rilasciato qualche dichiarazione veramente interessante! Leggete e prendete spunto per il vostro prossimo freeride trip!
Il vostro tour ha toccato prima nuova Delhi e poi Il Kashmir. Luci, persone, cultura e tradizioni totalmente diverse dalla vostra Germania. L’atmosfera indiana è riuscita a trasmettervi motivazione in più e un po’ di serenità nella freeride session in Kashmir?
Credo che l’atmosfera indiana abbia sicuramente avuto un’influenza sul nostro modo di sciare e soprattutto sulla nostra motivazione. Eravamo in India, e per noi era un lusso enorme e dovevamo usare i nostri giorni nel miglior modo possibile in modo tale da ottenere buon materiale per shooting e film! Questo probabilmente ci ha messo un pò di pressione addosso, ma era l’unica cosa che ci poteva dare un pò di agitazione in un posto meraviglioso. Ma dall’altra parte, siamo riusciti a pianificare nel modo migliore possibile il nostro soggiorno in Kashmir! Abbiamo sicuramente dovuto prendere un pò la mano con i tempi indiani, dove se perdi una navetta l’altra arriva un’ora dopo o piuttosto che con gli orari di apertura delle gondole. Ma con i giorni abbiamo cominciato a prendere confidenza con le persone e con i luoghi… e tutto è andato per il meglio!
Dal video si percepisce che le linee scelte sono assolutamente eccezionali ed emozionanti da vedere, ve le hanno consigliate i local o esperti occidentali? Secondo quale criterio avete selezionato gli spot stupendi che ci fate vedere nel video?
Le linee che abbiamo scelto sono state più o meno soggette alle condizioni che abbiamo trovato. Dopo le grandi nevicate che ha fatto non c’era altra scelta che linee più morbide, consigliate dalla nostra guida di heliski neo zelandese! Era difficile cercare di trovare linee più ripide e dure perchè il pericolo valanghe era molto alto… e nel caso in cui fosse successo qualcosa gli ospedali erano lontanissimi! Ma anche se non abbiamo potuto fare quello che avevamo programmato per tutte le linee, abbiamo sciato in posti meravigliosi con panorami che ci hanno regalato un senso di libertà incredibile!
L’India ed i paesi orientali hanno degli spot favolosi per il freeride. Partendo dall’Afghanistain e dai balcani passando per la Turchia e arrivando nell’estremo oriente! Sicuramente queste location hanno da trasmettere qualcosa in più rispetto ai nostri spot europei! Com’è stata l’unione di quest’esperienza mistica con il freeride?
Per essere onesti, non sono stata veramente in contatto con tutta questa roba mistica, ma di sicuro, c’è stato qualcosa di indescrivibile che ha reso il freeride in estremo oriente diverso dal solito. Forse è stata più la diversa cultura ed il modo più rilassato che hanno i locali in Kashmir rispetto alle persone in Europa. Specialmente nel Kashmir l’atteggiamento locale è a mio parere una buona miscela tra l’indiano tipico “stile rilassato meditazione” e l’arabo “stile serio e disciplinato”. La maggior parte dei turisti dimentica, che i kashmiri sono per lo più musulmani e che il loro atteggiamento è più probabilmente arabo!
Qual è la considerazione che hanno del freeride in questi paesi in cui nessuno penserebbe mai di poter trovare delle linee simili? I local praticano questo tipo di attività o vi guardavano come se la vostra disciplina fosse pura follia? Banalmente la gente potrebbe pensare che i materiali per loro molto costosi, non li portino ad avvicinarsi al freeride e alle discipline alpinistiche in generale, com’è la realtà?
La considerazione che ci ha portato in un paese come il Kashmir è stata la ricerca di una destinazione con aspetti culturali, politici e sciistici molto diversi dai nostri ed interessanti. Gulmarg sembrava il posto perfetto dove andare per un viaggio di sole ragazze freeski. I locali in realtà sono già abituati al freeride e sembrava capissero quello che stavamo facendo! Per loro noi siamo turisti e portiamo soldi e posti di lavoro a Gulmarg. Alcuni degli abitanti hanno lavorato con noi come guide ed alcuni di loro sono davvero ottimi skier! Per loro è sicuramente difficile potersi permettere gli stessi nostri materiali. Durante i fine settimana è possibile vedere solo gli indiani più ricchi venire fino a Gulmarg con i loro figli a sciare!
Le genti e le tradizioni indiane sono oramai famose in tutto il mondo, ma qual è stata per voi l’esperienza più significativa, o l’incontro più importante che avete fatto nel vostro viaggio?
Kashmir è molto diversa dall’India per le tradizioni e le persone che conosciamo. Come ho detto, il Kashmir è un misto tra il mondo arabo e il mondo indiano. L’esperienza più importante per me è stata quella di imparare che in qualche situazione non aiuta correre o stressarsi, perché non cambia assolutamente le cose. A volte per rilassarsi è necessario aspettare, la fiducia nella gente potrebbe darci la migliore soluzione o via d’uscita da tutti i nostri problemi! Un incontro molto importante è stato al lago Dal. Un pò ingenue abbiamo comprato del Safran falso. Appena l’abbiamo detto al proprietario della nostra houseboat è corso a cercare il truffatore per farci riavere i soldi indietro!
Dateci qualche info sui periodi dell’anno in cui si trova la neve migliore e le condizioni climatiche più adatte per ripetere un’esperienza straordinaria come la vostra!

Sono davvero orgogliosa di avere la possibilità di sciare ancora una volta con tutte le ragazze più forti al mondo nel freeski! Sarà una settimana fantastica, sono super emozionata!! Ma diciamo che non perdo tempo perchè ho in mente un sacco di progetti! Di sicuro ci sarà almeno un viaggio come l’India con Lena anche quest’anno. Un viaggio si svolgerà sicuramente in Europa e un altro da qualche altra parte dove avremo la possibilità di trovare tonnellate di neve! Quindi sicuramente un film e un phototrip saranno tra i progetti principali di questa stagione. Inoltre, nel mese di gennaio ci sarà una delle tappe del mio camp per giovani freeskiers! Your tour in India touched New Delhi and then, Kashmir. Lights, people, culture and traditions are completely different from your native land, Germany. The Indian atmosphere brought your freeride session there to be more motivated and a little bit more peaceful?
I think the Indian atmosphere definitely had an influence on our riding and especially on our motivation. At we were in India, so I know it’s a big luxury and we need to use our days there as good as possible to get some good film- and photo material. That was the little pressure part in being at such a wonderful place, with not many nice weather days. But on the other hand, you can plan your day as perfect as possible and some reasons will always chance in countries like Kashmir. You have to chance to discuss with residents, why the next shuttle is earliest in one hour or why the gondola doesn’t open earlier. It is how it is and you have to deal with it. I learned to trust the people and, that in the end, everything will work out fine.
From the video we can appreciate your selection of lines that seems to be really exceptional and exciting ! Are the spots recommended from indian people or from western experts? What are the standards that you used in order to select this kind of beautiful spots?
The lines we selected were pretty much dependent to the conditions we had. After a big snowfall, there was no other choice then the most mellow lines, recommended by our new Zealand Heli guides. There was no question in going any steeper or trying a not 100% stuff. The avalanche danger was way to high and hospitals are not even close to reach in case something happens. So our standards in choosing lines, were pretty much dependent on how the conditions were and what our heli guides told us to do or not do. But even if we couldn’t do what we planned to, all the lines we skied where wonderful with great Panorama and an epic feeling of freedom.
India and the eastern countries, starting from the closest countries to Europe are perfect spots in order to have fabulous freeriding experiences! Starting from Afghanistan and the Balkans, going through Turkey and arriving in the Far East! Surely these locations have to convey something more than our European spots! How was this experience of mystical union with freeride?
To be honest, I’m not really into all this mystic stuff, but for sure, there’s something I can’t really describe what made freeriding in far east different. Maybe it’s more the different culture and the way more relaxed attitude that locals in Kashmir have compared to people back in Europe. Especially in Kashmir, the locals attitude is in my opinion a good mixture between the typical Indian “layed back meditation style” and the Arabian “being serious and disciplined style”. Most tourists forget, that Kashmiris are mostly Muslims and that their attitude is more Arabian likely then the typical Indian one.
What is the consideration of freeriding in a country in which nobody knows that is possible to find similar lines? We would like to know if also the local population is used in this kind of practice or they looked at you as your business is pure madness? Trivially, people might think that the costs of materials are too high for Indian population. This situation led us to think that could be difficult for them to get closer to freeride and alpine disciplines. How is it in the reality?
The consideration, which led us to a country like Kashmir was, that we were looking for a destination that has very interesting cultural, political and skiing aspects. Gulmarg looked like the perfect place to go for a only girls freeski trip. The locals are already used to that kind of skiing and they seemed to understand what we were doing. For them, we’re tourists and we bring money and jobs to Gulmarg. Some of the locals even work as guides and they are really good skiers. For sure, the most can probably never afford to have the same material then we do and they will be never able to learn skiing, so for them, to get closer into “professional” skiing is tough. On the weekends, you can see just the more wealthy Indians coming up to Gulmarg with their children to spent a weekend skiing in Gulmarg.
Today people and Indian traditions are famous throughout the world. What was the most significant experience or the most important meeting that you lived in this trip in India?
Kashmir is little different to the traditions and people we know from India. As I sad, Kashmir is a mixture between the Arabian and the Indian world. The most important experience to me was to learn, that in some situation it doesn’t help to rush or to stress, because it doesn’t change things at all. Sometimes you need to relax, wait ant trust people that they will figure the best solution or way out. A very important meeting was at the Dal Lake. A little naive as we were, we bought some fake Safran. As we told our houseboat owner at night, he became so angry, that he started a search, to find the betrayer. They found him and we got our money back.
Give us some info about the period in which we could find the best snow conditions and the right weather conditions! We would like to collect all the information in order to have the possibility to repeat an amazing experience like yours one was!
The best time to go there is definitely February. Book your flight via Delhi to Srinagar. The best Hotel with its cute huts , delicious food, most comfortable lounge with fireplace and very, very warm and friendly stuff is the Highland Park Hotel in Gulmarg. I’m really proud to get the chance to ski the castel once again with all those amazing and strong freeski girls. The best of the world!!! It’s gonna be an awesome week!! Already excited. Other projects are already in my mind. For sure there’s gonna be at least one trip like India with Lena again this year. One trip will take place in Europe and the other somewhere else, where we can find tons of snow. So a film- and phototrip is one of the main projects this season.
