Ve lo avevamo promesso… e abbiamo fatto il possibile per mantenere la parola data e regalarvi l’intervista alla freeskier tedesca Lena Stoffel! Dopo l’incontro con Caja Schoepf, ci siamo ritrovate piacevolmete a tavolino con la sua compagna di viaggio, Lena! La bellisima freeskier ci ha rivelato le sue impressioni sull’eccezionale freeride tour in Kashmir!
Il vostro tour ha toccato prima Nuova Delhi e poi il Kashmir. Luci, persone, culture e tradizioni totalmente diverse dalla vostra Germania. L’atmosfera indiana è riuscita a trasmettervi motivazione in più e un po’ di serenità nella freeride session in Kashmir?
Sciare in un posto cosi’ diverso da casa è sicuramente molto più rilassante e motivante in quanto sei fortemente condizionato e sensibile alla gente ed ai paesaggi diversi da quelli di sempre… credo anche che l’essere in un ambiente così distante dal mio, mi abbia permesso di guardare con più attenzione la gente e le montagne stesse. Credo che dalla mia videoparte nel film non si riesca a percepire a pieno l’emozione che questi paesaggi mi hanno trasmesso e tantomeno quanto io abbia veramente apprezzato quest’esperienza. Sicuramente la location non era affollata come le nostre Alpi e la combinazione con la cultura indiana ed islamica è riuscita a creare un’atmosfera veramente rilassante!
Dal video si percepisce che le linee scelte sono assolutamente eccezionali ed emozionanti da vedere, ve le hanno consigliate i local o esperti occidentali? Secondo quale criterio avete selezionato gli spot stupendi che ci fate vedere nel video?
Abbiamo contattato una guida australiana, Bill Barker. Lui abitualmente organizza viaggi in Gulmarg e si è fatto aiutare dalle guide locali per soddisfare le nostre esigenze. Sostanzialmente quindi abbiamo sfruttato le conoscenze sia degli esperti che dei local! Ogni sera ci incontravamo con Bill e decidevamo su quali spot concentrare le nostre attenzioni per il giorno dopo, ed il giorno dopo raggiungevamo la location con guide locali.
Qual è la considerazione che hanno del freeride in questi paesi in cui nessuno penserebbe mai di poter trovare delle linee simili? I local praticano questo tipo di attività o vi guardavano come se la vostra disciplina fosse pura follia? Banalmente la gente potrebbe pensare che i materiali per loro molto costosi non li portino ad avvicinarsi al freeride e alle discipline alpinistiche in generale, com’ è la realtà?
Da quello che abbiamo potuto vedere e percepire, sostanzialmente la parte ricca della popolazione scia su piccoli impianti nelle valli. Sicuramente però abbiamo incontrato pochissimi local nella nostra freeride experience! Possiamo dire che i turisti si concentrano più sulle città e sui giri in gondola, mentre invece la maggior parte della popolazione non ha neanche idea di cosa sia il freeride.
Le genti e le tradizioni indiane sono oramai famose in tutto il mondo, ma qual è stata per voi l’esperienza più significativa, o l’incontro più importante che avete fatto nel vostro viaggio?
Per quanto mi riguarda potrebbe essere l’incontro con il proprietario della nostra houseboat a Srinagar. Quando stavamo facendo il giro per i canali, qualcuno ci ha venduto del falso safran. La mattina dopo non eravamo molto sicure del nostro acquisto e lo abbiamo mostrato al proprietario della houseboat. Lui si arrabbiò molto e cominciò a strillare che qualcuno ci aveva fregato, andando a cercare colui che aveva preso disonestamente i nostri soldi! A questo punto l’uomo ci organizzò un appuntamento per acquistare del vero safran! E quando dovevamo partire, ovviamente in ritardo per il volo, ci disse: “Sapete una cosa? Io posso fermare il vostro aereo, si si posso farlo!”
Dateci qualche info sui periodi dell’anno in cui si trova la neve migliore e le condizioni climatiche più adatte per ripetere un’esperienza straordinaria come la vostra!
Il periodo migliore per andare nel Kashmir è fine gennaio inizio febbraio. Noi abbiamo soggiornato nell’Highland park Hotel che era veramente grazioso! La nostra guida era Bill Barker che gestisce e organizza viaggi di questo tipo billstrips.com.
Progetti per la stagione che oramai sta per iniziare? Sappiamo del tuo piccolo infortunio..
Mi sto riprendendo da un infortunio al ginocchio che risale a marzo scorso. Quindi cercherò di ricominciare a sciare e spero di poter ripartire per un tour in India! Per ora abbiamo tante idee e stiamo cercando di organizzare la stagione e speriamo di essere a posto per gli European X Games di Tignes a marzo.

Your tour in India touched New Dheli and then, kashmir. Lights, people, culture and traditions are completely different from your native land, Germany.
The indian atmosphere brought your freeride session there to be more motivated and a little bit more peaceful?
Skiing in such a country with such a culture so different to the ours is defiantly more peaceful because you are so much more sensitive to people and landscape etc… and you see the mountains and the people with more care I guess. So I think the perspective goes away a little bit more from the filming part and more into really enjoying this experience. And of course its not as busy there as in the Austrian alps and this in combination with the Islamic culture and the muezzin and everything it gets really peaceful.
From the video we can appreciate your selection of lines that seems to be really exceptional and exciting ! Are the spots recommended from indian people or from western experts? What are the standards that you used in order to select this kind of beautiful spots?
We had a contact to an australien guide. Bill Barker. He does like organised trip to Gulmarg and he s got local guides who help s him with his clients. So we had both. In the evening we always met with Bill and talked about our best opportunities for the next day and throughout the day we went with a local guide.
What is the consideration of freeriding in a country in which nobody knows that is possible to find similar lines? We would like to know if also the local population is used in this kind of practice or they looked at you as your business is pure madness? Trivially, people might think that the costs of materials are too high for Indian population. This situation led us to think that could be difficult for them to get closer to freeride and alpine disciplines. How is it in the reality?
What we saw is the I guess mostly the richer Indian population skiing the beginner slope in the valley. At the weekend it was really really busy. I guess in freeriding there are not so many local people. There were mostly tourist going up to the top with the gondola. But there are the guides and a few really good locals. So I think its not normal to the most of the population.
Today people and Indian traditions are famous throughout the world. What was the most significant experience or the most important meeting that you lived in this trip in India?
Probably the owner of our houseboat in Srinagar. When we went through the little canals with the little boat, someone sold us fake safran. We showed him the safran because we weren’t sure about it at the next morning . And he was getting so angry and mad that somebody sold us wrong safran. He sent out all his staff to find the guy and get our money back. He made it and organised us a guy who s got real safran. It just seemed he knew so many people and he connected everybody so… he also said when we were quite late for our plane back to dheli: “ You know what?… don’t worry … I can stop the plane for you! You don’t believe me? … yeah yeah its true!! “
Give us some info about the period in which we could find the best snow conditions and the right weather conditions! We would like to collect all the information in order to have the possibility to repeat an amazing experience like yours one was!

We know that you have an invitation to participate in one of the most important events of the women’s freeski scene, the Nine Queens. What do you think? Other projects for this season?
For me I am getting back after my knee injury which happened beginning of last march. So getting back into skiing and hopefully go on trip like the India trip again. We are just collecting ideas and start to plan. And the maybe the European X Games in Tignes in March.
